Easy to Make Laundry Detergent

I couldn't believe how easy it is to make your own laundry detergent without all those chemicals and it's so easy even our children can do it. They are learning to work together and they are getting a math lesson all while making homemade laundry detergent.

Ingredients you need are:

Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda (1 cup)
Borax (1 cup)
Kirk's Castile Soap (one bar)

I used two cups of each of the Borax and Super Washing Soda to get more out of our money.
DMan and Ducky are putting the first ingredient into our box, which you can use anything to store your laundry detergent. We started out by making a little just to try it out.

Next they put in the Borax.

Finally they shredded the Kirk's Castile Soap into our box. You can use a food processor for this if you want but I would dedicate it only to this project.

The Kirk's Castille soap does have a little scent but not strong at all.

So here is our test. And surprisingly our clothes came out nice and fresh. Really that had no smell to them but I heard the smell isn't good for anyways. Our clothes were clean and I'm definitely going to be using this instead of buying the laundry detergent at the store to money. I have left over Borax, Washing Soda and Soap, so I'm not spending any more money. I'm very happy with our new discovery.

Let me know if you try this and what you think.

We have been doing this for about 3 years now and love it! Very easy and with the 5 of us extremely affordable!

I actually roped my husband into doing the first batch of homemade soap.... we did a wet version and loved it! Basically the same recipe, just dissolved in warm water. (stir slowly till the melty magic happens.

Love that you got your kids involved!

I have been making our homemade laundry detergent for about a year now. It saves so much money! An added bonus for us is it doesn't have all those extra chemicals and fragrances, we have two in our home with skin issues. We use pretty much the same formula as you except we use fels naptha in place of the castile soap. We also use vinegar for fabric softener.

Wow, these are some great ideas you and the others who have commented are giving me!! I have a husband with sensitive skin. Well, I have sensitive skin too but our laundry detergent doesn't bother mine like it does his. We've been looking for alternatives for him. I really want to try this out! Plus, if it works; It would make it really easy to get a lot of the ingredients stored up (and cost a lot less) for our emergency preparedness kit.

Thanks do much for this! Great timing as I seriously considering switching to homemade soap. I am tired of all the chemicals in the regular soap when it's just not necessary!

I've never tried this but was interested in doing so at one point. How does it work for HE machines? Would love to know as that holds me back from trying this out.

sounds great, I must have done something wrong when I did it because it didn't leave my clothes clean. I will have to try your recipe! Thanks!

I love making our own detergent! We often add essential oil for scent. I also always have to remember that its ok that there are not a ton of bubbles. Bubbles do not clean the clothes. :)

I'm so glad to hear all of these great comments:)

Marina,
I know on the Borox box it says it good for HE machines. Also I looked up the liquid recipe on the Duggar website and it said it was good for HE machines too. If you any doubt I would contact the company of your washer.

The recipe is great, but I just want to thank you for the song! I needed to hear that this morning. I love it when Christians share the love of the Lord in every little thing they do. God bless you!

Cindy,

I use two to three tablespoons of the dry or 2/3 cup of liquid. Hope this helps.
