Leaf Arragement

The remainder of our Botany lesson, we will be going outside to collect leafs and label there Leaf Arrangement,Leaf Venation, and the Leaf Margins.

To keep the leaf from rotting we covered it with glue first. I never knew how to preserve the leaf, so this was nice to find out.

Planting the seeds.

This co-op was great because it goes right in line with Botany, I will post some pictures of our grown plants soon. We love nature, it's awesome home schooling our little ones.

Botany-Testing Transpiration

D Man's Hypothesis was that would lose it's chlorophyll and it will not be able to trasnport water.

This when we first started the experiement.

This is after a week, so D Man was correct.

We also studied  the Anatomy of a Leaf.

1. The very tip is called the apex

2. The midrib is the main vein of the leaf.

3. The entire leaf above the petiole is called the lamina

4. The edge that surrounds the leaf is called the margin.

Leaves- Do you know that leaves have mouths?

On the bottom side of very leaf are many liilte mouths,called stomata.

The stomata opens when the sun is out and it's closes when it's night.

Isn't it AMAZING what God has created.

requires light,chlorophyll (makes leaves green),carbon dioxide from the air, and water from the soil.

Dispersal and Fruit

Mechanically Disperal

D Man drew a tractor for mechanical dispersal of seeds.

Wind Dispersal

D Man drew the sky and clouds with seeds flying through the sky.

Water Disperal

D Man drew the ocean with a counut floating in the water.

Human Disperal

D Man drew a man with a rake planting a seed.

These are all five drawings for Human,Water,Wind,Mechanical, and Animal Disperal.

Fleshy Fruits

Hesperidium ( Orange)

A modified berry.

Its has a leathery skin but not as hard a pepo.

Pepo and Hesperidium are both modified fruits.

We  compared the outer shell of each.

It's skin is hard and thick it is called a rind.

They all have thin skin and the entire fruit is fleshy.

We are learning about fruit, we did a art project on fruit and some veggies. These are the four seasons, we are still learning all about botany, so I thought this was appropriate.

There paintings came out really good.

New Butterfly and New Caterpillar

A Gulf Fritillary landed on one of our new plants, we wanted to attract new butterflies and they came, how cool is that. A New Caterpillar, we think it is a Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar. Our milkweed is all gone, they have eaten it all again. This time we had 24 caterpillars, I planted 4 new milkweeds this season. We now have to wait for the others to grow back.

Garden Day-Botany

This is the first time we have had ladybugs, they had a feast to eat with all the aphids. I love the springtime. More Caterpillars, I think this time we had over 20.

We had to plant more milkweed because we ran out of food for the caterpillars. We planted 4 more milkweed.

This plant below is called a Butterfly bush, We wanted to attract other differnt kinds of butterflies, we will see.

Isn't this lovely, Daddy and Dennis making mud pies and eating them.

A butterfly on our screen, this was the last one for now.

5 more butterflies hatched today on Haley's Birthday, she was so excited:) They got to hold one because he fell from the wall. He was ok.

Butterfly emerges

This is what we woke up to this morning, Haley wanted them to hatch on her birthday and she got one day before. There was two that came out of there chrysalis,one was already out but the second we got to watch the whole thing. The pictures show the process. Butterflies aren't able to fly right away because there wings are wet and the blood in there wings hasn't reached them. So this one was drying his wings, waiting to fly. When we got home from church they were just flying away(2hrs later). God is so amazing, we got to see two butterflies hatch.

This a very first time we got to see one come out, its very hard to see.

We had 11 caterpillars and they all stayed this time, so we have more that will hatch soon.......
